This page helps you find your way around the Louvre Museum with an overview of the Louvre map: the three wings (Richelieu, Sully, Denon), departments and key works. A detailed plan is available on the museum website and at the entrance; booking your tickets online lets you arrive relaxed and make the most of your visit.
Museum layout: the three wings
The Louvre is organised in three main wings around the Cour Napoléon (where the pyramid stands): Richelieu (rue de Rivoli side), Sully (centre, around the Cour Carrée) and Denon (Seine side). Each wing has several levels (basement, ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor depending on the area). The official Louvre map shows departments (Egyptian Antiquities, Paintings, Sculptures, etc.) and circulation. Allow time: moving from one wing to another can take several minutes.
Denon wing: Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, Winged Victory
The Denon wing houses some of the best-known masterpieces: the Mona Lisa (Salle des États, 1st floor), the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace (staircase and Greek antiquities rooms), plus many Italian and French paintings. This is often the busiest part; to avoid the crowds in front of the Mona Lisa, come early or late in the day.
Sully wing: Egyptian antiquities, medieval Louvre
The Sully wing includes Egyptian antiquities (sphinx, sarcophagi, everyday objects), Greek antiquities (including the Venus de Milo), French paintings and the medieval moats of the Louvre. The Cour Carrée is in this wing. Checking the Louvre map before your visit helps you target the rooms you want to see first.
Richelieu wing: sculptures, Islamic art, paintings
The Richelieu wing has sculptures (Cour Marly, Cour Puget), Islamic art, Northern painting (Flanders, Holland) and decorative arts. The covered courtyards are spectacular and often a bit less crowded than the Denon wing. A museum map in hand or on your phone lets you alternate between quieter areas and must-sees.
Entrances and access on the map
The main entrance is through the pyramid (Cour Napoléon). Other entrances (Carrousel gallery, Richelieu passage) may be open depending on the period; check the museum website. Once inside, the Louvre map in the halls shows toilets, cloakrooms, shops and catering.
